What I would like to achieve as a surfer

My name is Ackeam Phillips and I attend the Donald Quarrie High School. I am sixteen years old and I am one of Jamaica’s most outstanding junior surfers. I am a member of the Jamaica Surfing Association and I represent my country in international competitions.

I would like to achieve a lot out of surfing; I would like to get a sponsor so I can travel the world to surf competitions and meet the professional surfers from all over the world. Also, I would like to become a professional surfer but I need new equipment; funds so I can travel and enter competitions so that I can be exposed and interest sponsors. And also so that people will know who I am and that I can surf very well.

I would also like to be able to help my younger brother and sister to go to school everyday and to become better surfers. I want them to make the National Junior Squad and surf for Jamaica one day, but I need the experience so that I can coach them properly. Not only do I want to help my family, but I want to also help all the groms here in Jamaica so that they can become better and represent Jamaica like I have done.

My education is important to me; but because I go to these international surfing games put on by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Pan American Surfing Association (PASA), I miss out on a lot of school work. However, in order to become better in school I will need to do extra classes. This is not easy because my family is not rich and I am not an only child so I have to sacrifice extra classes so that my other siblings can go to school. My career choice is within the Information Technology field, but I do not have the opportunity to go to the classes because they are full and my family does not have enough money to send me to classes outside of my school. Also, sometimes the teachers do not come to class because of the behaviour of other students, and so this only limits how far my education can go.

I do not only want to be a professional surfer, but a well educated professional surfer. I also see my life going in another discipline than surfing, but while I want to achieve this, I also want to maintain my surfing. All my friends and family are all involved in surfing and so I have made up my mind to become a professional surfer.

Firs of all, I would like to be a professional because I would represent my homeland with proud. With such experience, I would travel around the world and, from the same way accumulate experience, having those things, Iwould be a visionary, having big planes to develop surfing to a high level here in Dominican Republic. Therefore, I would never forget the people that was around me helping and supporting me, and give them back all the help to the children surfers who wants to learn about the sport and help to those are actually surfing. I would like to help my family economicaly. I would like to make contest for young people in order to develop their skills and competition level to be have a good positioning on Panamerican Constests. A little house at the beach World never be a bad inversion. Ah, other thing!!!, I World dedicate to change some of the minds of people who are against our National Team, principaly persons persons who has a good living and are economicaly well, those people just live in gossip and talking bad about the achivements of other surfers, How could I change this? Well, showing me as a simple person to the people, supporting the local contests and DON´T THINK I AM A MAJESTY been nothing in my city, I would be a person that no matter I have always look for the TRUE and continue studying and preparing me. I would like to make a plan to discover new surf beaches localy, if I can, to make some contest.. When I grow up, I would like to have a surf bar where the people can go and watch on a High Definition Screen international surf contest like “Pipelinemaster” live, and by the same way, give some messages to young people who wants to be like me!!!

Lo primero sería ser profesional porque así representaría mi país con más orgullo. Con esto podria darle la vuelta al globo terraqueo y de igual forma ir acumulando experiencias, teniendo estas, tendría visiones grandes para desarrollar el surf a un grado más alto en Dominicana. De igual formar no olvidarme de las personas que siempre me estuvieron ayudando, y darle todo mi apoyo a los menores que quieran entrar al deporte y a los que ya estén. A mi familia le quisiera ayudar economicamente. Realizarle competencias a los jovenes para que mejoren su nivel y queden bien pocisionados en los Pamericanos. Una casita en la playa no sería mala inversion. Ah y otra cosa, me dedicaría a cambiar de mentalidad a algunas personas que estan en contra de nuestro Team nacional, principalmente personas que se ven bien economicamente y que solo se la pasan murmurando los trabajos que uno a logrador, como los cambiaría? Bueno, mostrandomele sensillo a la gente, siguiendo apoyando los contest locales Y NO CREEME MAJESTAD sin ser nadie en tu ciudad, actuar de una manejar que por más que yo tenga siempre trate y busque la VERDAD. Hacer un plan para descubrir nuevas playas de surf a nivel local, y si se puede, hacer algunos torneos. Tratar de abrir un bar surf donde la gente pueda ir a ver en pantalla gigante cuando pase algun contest “Hasta el PipeMaster va a estar en vivo”. Y llevarles mi mensaje a jovenes que quieran ser como yo!

Through this, I am pleased to address you. In character as president of the Argentine Association of Surfing, in order to seek their cooperation before the formal implementation of Brian Masmut aimed at fellowships 2008 to be awarded by the ISA.

Por medio de la presente, tengo el agrado de dirigirme a Ud., en carácter de presidente de la Asociación Argentina de Surf, con el fin de solicitarle su colaboración ante la aplicación formal de Brian Masmut con miras en las becas 2008 a otorgar por la ISA.

Este competidor realmente posee un potencial extra por sobre los mismos de su edad. A obtenidos títulos nacionales en 3 ocasiones y a su corta edad entrena muy seriamente de la mano de su coach Sebastián Cano, no solo surfeando todo el año en nuestras heladas aguas, sino que también se aventuraron a realizar viajes de entrenamiento y freesurfing a países vecinos como Brasil y Chile. Con solo 13 años ya tiene planeado competir durante la próxima temporada no solo en su categoría sino que también en categorías mayores como Under/16, Under/18 e incluso su debut en Open para los próximos eventos Nacionales.

Cuenta con varios sponsors que lo ayudan otorgándole productos (tablas, accesorios, wetsuits y demás equipamiento), por lo que en este aspecto no presenta dificultades. Como sabrán en nuestro país la educación es publica y gratuita, de esta forma económicamente los estudios de Brian no son un problema.

Por otro lado, nuestra moneda se encuentra devaluada en relación al dólar, por lo que incurrir en gastos para tikets de avión, estadías y viáticos en proyectos de competencias internacionales, presentan una gran barrera para su familia. Su padre cuenta con un trabajo de medio tiempo lo que representa un sueldo no mayor a 400U$S mensuales, mientras que su madre es ama de casa y por momentos dedica su tiempo a criar a sus otros hermanos. No tiene una vivienda fija, por lo que el alquiler de un departamento consume gran parte de sus ingresos. Es más que evidente que la adjudicación de la beca implicara un gran pasó para su carrera deportiva; de otra forma difícilmente pueda lograr el máximo nivel que su potencial nos deja imaginar.

Como note ver entre los requisitos para la aplicación de la beca, se menciona que el competidor debe ser una fuente de inspiración para otros. No ahí mejor caso que refleje esto. Las aguas en nuestro país durante la temporada de invierno se tornan muy frías (estando entre las más frías del planeta para la práctica de surfing), y es aquí donde Brian marca la diferencia. Los pasados dos inviernos el continuo su entrenamiento mientras que casi todo el deporte aquí se frena. Concurrir en días de temperaturas muy bajas (entre 0º y 5º grados centígrados) y ver a un joven de su edad con tanta energía surfeando por horas, ha sido de gran inspiración para muchos otros que de esta forma se animaron, generándose así en parte gracias a Brian un incremento en los surfistas de invierno.

Hace dos años que comence a pensar en una carrera un poco mas seria y esto llego al conoser a mi actual coach, con el que formulamos un plan de carrera para los proximos años. Quieor participar de todas las representaciones juniors de mi pais desde aqui hasta la edad que exeda Under-18 (luego continuar con un plan Open del mismo nivel). EL pasado mes de Noviembre 2007, tube la oportunidad de quedar seleciconado para el equipo Argetino para los Juegos Panamericanos de Iquique Chile. Lamentablemente mis padres no pudieron ayudarme economicamente.

Con las experiencias internaiconales, intentare liderar los rankings nacioanles y concretar dentor de muchso años , como maximo logro un podio Open ISA mundial, cosa que nigun Argetino logro aun.

Mi pais en surf nunca fue potencia nisiquiera a nivel regional Sud Americano.
